The Mountain Remembers: Bridger Bowl Past & Present
Collage by Brooks Overstake
The United States has approximately 505 active ski areas.
Of these, about 233 (or roughly 60%) participate in major multi-resort passes like Epic, Ikon, or Indy Pass.
This leaves an estimated 157 ski areas that are independently operated and not affiliated with major multi-resort passes.
The Mountain Remembers is a celebration of skiing as it once was and still can be: free of mechanized access, corporate resort models, and extractive recreation economies. Every photograph in this project is made entirely by human power—no chairlifts, snowmobiles, or gas engines, just skin tracks, deep snow, and breath. By diptyching Archived images to my photography, The Mountain Remembers shows that regardless of the sold experience, there remain those who can enter the mountains with mindfulness, free of greed and exploitation, and play the way those before us occupied the land.
